After a few consultations with other vocal teachers, I put off singing lessons for over a year because every place I went to felt a bit uncomfortable (and pushy?). When I finally decided to try again, I found Emmett and I’m so glad I did. From Day 1, before we even started singing, it was clear he wanted to fully understand what I was looking for, what I wanted my voice to sound like, and why I came to him in the first place. He isn’t just there to teach everyone the same basics of singing over and over. Personally, I’ve never cared much about singing opera or having a really loud and belty voice—I want to sing the songs I enjoy listening to—so we didn’t focus on that. We worked on the small things that I could never seem to figure out on my own that were making my voice hard to control and feel confident about. Almost immediately I started sounding better, and more importantly, I’m able to go home and practice as much as I want now that I know what I’m doing wrong and how to identify it so I can actually work on fixing it. And if you do want to sing loud and clear and hit high notes, Emmett absolutely knows how to teach that as well, which I know because I’ve heard his other students sing, and they sound amazing. Of course, he does too. But, while he’s incredible at teaching, I really feel like it’s important to have a teacher who you connect with and feel safe around (singing can feel very vulnerable!) and I think that’s what really makes Emmett special. I look forward to every lesson not just because I really want to improve, but also because he’s just fun to be around, and the other students I see in passing are too. It really is the best place around if you want to learn how to sing !

You're focused, funny, and seriously one of the most original voices I’ve heard. You’re not out here trying to sound like anyone else, and that’s what makes working with you so fun. It was awesome seeing you perform at the group singing class for the first time. You stepped up, sang your heart out, and looked cool doing it.
