Tips to Stay Healthy and Cool

Last Updated 12/16/2021in News & Press

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning from August 14 through August 19 that includes the Roseville area.

Tips to Stay Healthy and Cool

  • Drink plenty of water (not very cold), non-alcoholic and decaffeinated fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty. If you on a fluid restrictive diet or have a problem with fluid retention, consult a physician before increasing consumption of fluids.
  • Wear lightweight, light colored loose fitting clothing as well as a hat and sunglasses when outdoors.
  • Always apply sunscreen and limit exposure during mid-day.
  • Slow down: reduce, eliminate or reschedule strenuous activities until the coolest time of the day. When participating in outdoor activities, do so with a buddy and pace yourself in the heat.
  • Always monitor those at risk for heat related illnesses especially those on medications for heart disease, high blood pressure, etc. as they may be affected more by the heat.
  • Never leave children, infants or pets inside vehicles.
  • Check on older, sick, or frail people who may need help responding to the heat.
  • Take a cool bath or shower.
  • Provide pets with plenty of water and shade.

Cooling Center Open

To assist those who need a place to escape the heat, a cooling center is open noon-7:00pm on Saturday, August 15 through Wednesday, August 19 at the Tower Theater, located at 417 Vernon St.

To minimize the potential of spread of COVID-19, the cooling center is adhering to all guidance from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). The guidance requires visitors to the cooling center (including staff) complete a COVID-19 symptom screening, wear a face covering and maintain six feet of physical distancing. You can find the complete list of requirements related to cooling center operations on the CDPH Cooling Center Guidelines webpage.

Spray Grounds

The Vernon Street Town Square Spray Ground (311 Vernon Street) is open daily from 10:00am-8:00pm. City staff encourages visitors to maintain a minimum of six feet between people outside of one’s household, and parents and guardians are encouraged to bring their own seating for use while supervising children. This is a free activity.

Keeping Your Home Cool

The easiest way to keep your home cool is to prevent it from heating up in the first place. Roseville Electric offers these tips to keep your house cool:

Air conditioning / cooling

  • Set the thermostat to 78 degrees or higher.
  • - Adjust ceiling fans to turn counter-clockwise in the summer.
  • Use fans instead of central air conditioning whenever possible.

Appliances

  • Use your oven, stove, dishwasher, dryer, washing machine and other heat-producing appliances early in the morning or later in the evening, when temperatures are cooler.

Cooking

  • Prepare cold meals or put your grill to work.
  • Consider using your microwave to cook or reheat your dinner during peak hours.

More ways to save energy and stay cool

  • Keep windows, blinds and draperies closed to keep the heat out.
  • Turn off unnecessary lights.
